Amazon US offers big discounts on foldable phones for Prime Day
Amazon Prime Day is here and some of the biggest discounts are on some of the most expensive devices. In other words, let’s have a look at some foldables – they are typically the most expensive smartphones around, though for four days this week their prices will be easier to swallow.
Starting with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, we have to make a note – Samsung’s big Galaxy Unpacked event is tomorrow and it will unveil the Z Fold7, which is supposed to be thin and light. And it is supposed to be more expensive (in terms of MSRP) than the Z Fold6. That means it will be a long while before we see it at $1,150.
And the Z Fold6 is $1,150 right now, not far off the typical price for a Galaxy S25 Ultra. The Ultra has better cameras for sure and a newer chipset, but the Fold has the futuristic form factor and the larger 7.6” display on the inside.
The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a smaller discount, unfortunately, and it might be a tough sell at $250 more than the Galaxy foldable. That Tensor G4 already feels slow and one of the strengths of foldables is supposed to be multitasking. Still, Google is working hard on making Android better on foldables and the Pixel puts you in the front seat of that development.
Moving over to clamshell foldables, the same warning applies to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 – the Z Flip7 is getting unveiled tomorrow. That one will be more expensive than its predecessor too and it won’t have Prime Day discounts until next year.
The Motorola Razr+ 2024 is a bit cheaper than the Z Flip6. It doesn’t have dust resistance (it’s rated IPX8 compared to IP48) and it uses the weaker Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip compared to the 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. Other differences include a 50MP 2x/47mm telephoto camera instead of an ultra-wide (12MP on the Galaxy). Both phones have 4,000mAh batteries, but Motorola has faster wired charging (45W vs. 25W) and the same wireless (15W).
You can go even cheaper with the Motorola Razr 2024. The Dimensity 7300X is rather weak, but it’s paired with a decent 4,200mAh battery with 30W wired and 15W wireless charging (“decent” because the chip’s efficiency hurts battery life). The 3.6” cover display is comparable to that of the Z Flip6, though, and you get a 6.9” 120Hz LTPO OLED on the inside.
